Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for April 2024
CareerSource Capital Region Connects Graduates to Future Opportunities

GADSDEN, LEON & WAKULLA COUNTIES, Fla. – According to the FloridaCommerce, the regional unemployment rate for Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties was 3.3 percent for April 2024.
The region’s April 2024 unemployment rate was 0.7 percentage point greater than the region’s year ago rate of 2.6 percent. The labor force was 199,884, up 3,360 (+1.7 percent) over the year.
Wakulla County had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.8 percent in the Capital Region followed by Leon County at 3.3 percent and Gadsden County at 3.9 percent. The region's April 2024 unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage point above the state rate of 3.2 percent. There were 6,615 unemployed residents in the Capital Region.
The top six advertised occupations in the Capital Region in April 2024 were as follows:
- Registered Nurses
- Retail Salespersons
- First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers
- Heavy Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers
- Customer Service Representatives
- Food Service Managers

In this crucial moment, CareerSource Capital Region’s Learn, Earn, and Advance Program (LEAP) is reaching out to graduates, providing a comprehensive support system to help them navigate the road ahead. LEAP is a dynamic, no-cost initiative that empowers young individuals in their career aspirations, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to thrive.
LEAP is tailored for individuals aged 16 to 24 and provides a range of services to support career exploration, academic success, and professional growth. These services include personalized job search strategies, job shadowing, paid/unpaid internships, on-the-job training, mentoring, tutoring, and one-on-one coaching and counseling, all aimed at equipping participants with the skills and confidence needed to achieve their goals.
"At CareerSource Capital Region, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential," Jecheta Watson-Blackshear, Manager of the WIOA Youth Program (LEAP), emphasizes. "Whether their aspirations lie in securing employment, charting a career path, or pursuing short-term training, we're committed to providing the support they need to succeed."
One of the distinguishing features of LEAP is its commitment to making education and training accessible to all. Eligible participants have the opportunity to receive financial aid and scholarships, easing the burden of tuition, textbooks, and other educational expenses.
